I bring philosophy into practice, making complex classic philosophical ideas accessible for a wide audience of professionals, students, and life-long learners. After a decade in traditional academic positions, I started my own business and began doing philosophical work in more practical contexts. I am an APPA-certified philosophical counselor, a public speaker, an author, an ethics trainer, and an executive coach (among other things!).

This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Marcus Tullius Cicero's work On The Nature Of Gods, specifically on the overall structure of the dialogue, and the characters involved, who are representatives of three important schools of ancient philosophy, Gaius Velleius the Epicurean, Quintus Lucilius Balbus the Stoic, and Gaius Cotta the Academic Skeptic.

Thank you for your service Dr. Sadler

Glad it was helpful for you
I love these videos ❤ thx so much
You're welcome!
great lecture!! i love to listen to your videos while i cook :)
Glad you enjoy them
I've come to appreciate your inclusion of the Greek and Latin equivalents of certain ideas, and I wonder if you think it's practical for a student of philosophy to try learning one of them. I suppose the obvious answer is no, learning languages in general is a huge commitment, but then I think back to some of your videos where sometimes you contrast the English translation with the original meanings (eudaimonia comes to mind). Do you think there's a wide enough gap between the richness of the original text's ideas and their translations, to merit the extra effort? Thanks for the new series!
It's practical to learn a language, if you plan to devote the time and attention it requires. You just have to look at what you spend your time on already, and figure out whether its valuable enough to you to shift what you devote your time and attention to, or not
Hi Dr. Sadler! Another great video as always. I've been greatly enjoying your self directed study series as an engineering student who wants to learn about philosophy to have a more fruitful human existence. Your videos as guides to reading certain philosophers have been very helpful as well. I want to get into heidegger but want to make sure I get the best approach possible, will you make a video about getting into Heidegger in the near future? Thank you for everything and best regards!
Near future? Well, I've got a number of others promised already. Maybe by the end of the year
Without a subject to compare to Parmenides becomes The Beatles Nowhere Man. My grandson and I were having a "Master"-Grasshopper moment when I asked him to describe "Nothing" or nothingness. I was testing a 15 year old for his perception of abstractions. He responded that he couldn't and gave a brief explanation. I replied that of course even a dark empty space is something. Nothingness is something of an idea that's limited to our sensory perception. Our minds can't frame a picture we can't imagine, but still this idea. Dr. Sadler, I don't think I'm digressing way too far if I ask you this. Is our idea of nothingness (and/or): an untruth, a deficiency or insufficient, incorrect? Am I asking the wrong question? Maybe a series on Kung Fu?😁
I think there are multiple ideas of nothingness or non being
Would love to see some lectures on Heidegger's analysis of the Greek thinkers. I was just reading his lectures about Heraclitus and Heidegger had some not-so-nice words for Cicero that made me laugh. Waking up to see a Cicero lecture was a welcome treat; thank you for everything you do!
Yeah, Heidegger isn’t a good guide when it comes to ancient philosophy after Aristotle, unfortunately.
Really good stuff Dr. Sadler. I'm seeing how Greek philosophy could be a precursor to Judeo-Christian thought. More than a yin yang harmony, more as a need for comparison. Apostle Paul's prompt for Believers to embrace the need to struggle for growth. The original Hebrew idea of sin as missing the mark as an archer would. Jumping forward to Hegel's blossom transforming.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for this series!

Man, this is impressive and I am still just in the preface
Thanks!
Epictetus is my favorite Stoic. It's taken me a while to digest The Discourses and with that I feel that I'm still a student and will probably be a student the remainder of my life. I just recently completed my 4th time through his teachings and each time find new depths of understanding. With that, I am still new. Each time through, I would branch off to other sources, some mentioned by him like Xenophon & Plato to learn about Socrates directly, other times to modern Stoics like Robertson & Massimo. I read Irvine, but didn't really get as much out of his book. Massimo has a Great Courses lecture on Stoicism which was helpful. Robertson has several books and lessons that he taught on Socrates and Marcus which were also helpful. Having said all that, I find your reviews to be the icing on the cake, bringing it all together along with your Greek translations that add to understanding. My quest into Stoicism began with scouting and I was introduced to Epictetus from Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of scouting. He adamantly says that character is the main AIM of scouting and his source when writing his book was Epictetus. Initially, I read Epictetus to figure out how to help me deal with angry or misunderstanding parents, as Epictetus states, education was needed. I then started realizing that much of the misunderstandings and incorrect judgements were mine, education had begun. That is where I am at now. I still see scouting, as designed by Baden-Powell, as a course for youth in character. However, current scouting is changing and much of the original intention and underlying teachings are becoming diluted, which is unfortunate. Now I'm more involved in a program for youth called White Stag leadership training. This program incorporates much more of Baden-Powell's original scouting and I see the character development aspects there. Thank you for your videos Greg. I've watched other videos define Epictetus and Stoicism who take a much more academic approach which seems to miss what I think Epictetus and Stoicism is trying to achieve. While your videos are very detailed, they help the viewer continue along the discovery process for themselves. Thanks again. As an additional note, I have also practiced Vipassana and read the Discourses that correspond. I had started that practice during Covid lock downs, so was self taught and prior to studying Stoicism further. During that practice I came across a blogger who described the similarities with Buddhism and Stoicism, which brought me back to Stoic studies. I do see the similarities but never got so far into Buddhism to contemplate the concept of self or not self. I tend to agree more with the Stoic perspective of the center of reason, which I think relates to practical Wisdom. There still has to be a self to observe the not self? However, from a Socrates perspective, the Buddhist concept of not self could relate to one of the outcomes of Socratic questioning of aporia? Or along the lines of indescribable knowledge, like Tao is referred.
Glad you enjoy the videos
Makes me think of the difference between Shunyata and Nihilism
Well, if you read the text, you’ll see Nishitani spelling that out at a number of points

An immersion into Business happened. Kaizen looks like a synthetic production. Urakami cathedral bombing seems to have a symbolic irony .

@@GregoryBSadler indeed people fill a spiritual void with the kitchen sink
@@GregoryBSadler do you feel that the US is in this conundrum lately?
@@goldboolean6819 Why lately? Nihilism has been discussed as a problem for more than a century
@@GregoryBSadler maybe I'm thinking in terms of magnitude.
A bit off topic but I appreciate how you share the etymology of certain words that pertain to the subject being discussed. I really appreciate that. Rabhere, rabhas, and rabies are fascinating in the way of being both a disease and desire. Truthfully, unchecked and it will consume one. I see Bi-polar being a modern equivalent even if others will swear it has nothing to do with one's own shaping of their "daemon" and/or habits. Thank you for sharing.
Having quite a few people in my family who suffer from bipolar disorder, I'd say it's definitely not a modern equivalent to being "rabid"
That one helped a lot! What Hegel was saying there reminded me a lot of the ideas of David Bohm and Quantum Mechanics...
Glad it was helpful
MacIntyre is an extraordinary thinker. I recently read and did some extended study on "Breaking the Chains of Reason" ("Out of Apathy" ed. I figured you would have at least one upload on MacIntyre, thought I should check it out. Thanks.

@@GregoryBSadler Fantastic! Thank you, Dr. Sadler. Appreciate it
Hello, I liked your break down of philosophical works of Sartre, and Martin Heidegger. Especially the one about metaphysics. But I find some contradiction in what Martin said about anxiety. That anxiety reveals the nothing. And nothing repels. Hence the unheimliness. While true, why and how does drinking or smoking increase the anxiety or may be even caffeine. Does that person become more sensitive to the nothing? But the underlying question which I always end up asking is... What can and should I do with this information? It is nice to be knowledgeable about it and how Martin Heidegger view is so revolutionary. But what can one do with it? Just want to know how can it help me? Happy to get a paid session if you would have time. Thank you.
We didn't do any breakdown of Sartre or Heidegger in this video. If you want to book a tutorial session, you know where to go
Finally done! Started Feb 1 and finished about 3 months later. I watched every video! Thank you Dr. Sadler. I'm going to start my Bachelors in Philosophy soon and your videos have been very informative and helpful. However, where im from Philosophy texts are very expensive and Hegel especially is not accessible. The best and most affordable texts i can get my hands on are Penguin Editions, but since they're not the go-to scholarly editions, im worried whether they are a good choice to stick to.
You do know that with just a little bit of searching, you can find thousands of texts online, including Hegel

As a younger philosopher (I'm working on a political philosophy right now), may I ask if you agree with the idea that Schopenhauer is hugely underrated in terms of his impact? It just seems to me the almost prophetic anti-christ theophany of Nietschze is always pointed out, but Schopenhauer never seems to get credit for building the metaphysical world of will from which nietschze had to give birth to himself; (just seems this way to me please correct me if I am wrong)
You'd made yourself wrong already by choosing and using such hyperbolic language. "Hugely", "always", "never" aren't the ways to make good judgements about the history of ideas or about present appreciation of philosophers. As it happens, Schopenhauer is quite popular again and has been for quite some time. Nietzsche does draw on Schopenhauer, but he draws on many other people as well, and is a pretty original thinker
Good afternoon Professor, just wanted to stop by and show my support for the channel. I was at your Q&A a few days ago but I've been a long-time watcher (I stumbled upon your lecture on Kafka's The Metamorphosis almost a decade ago now). Your commitment to the arts is greatly appreciated. I know you hear this a lot but your teaching is needed now more than ever. You've taught me some valuable lessons through your videos: not to look for shortcuts because there are none, philosophy is hard, but also not to be afraid of humbling myself. And for that, you have my thanks. Have a good rest of the week!
that's very nice of you to say, and I'm glad not just that you've found the videos useful, bit also that you're not attempting shortcuts!
I set up a "Cow Goth" station on Pandora, and it started playing AC/DC. If you compare the guitar tuning of AC/DC with Sisters of Mercy and The Cult, it's pretty signature of Goth Rock / Southern Rock.
Yes, one can likely make all sorts of "if you do this. . . then you can look at things like this" inferences.
Incredible. Thank you so much for giving this to people for free🎉

Great show! The part about only having portions of stories in the past ( 14:55 ) made me think about my comic book hunts as a kid. If you found a particularly important comic, it was a big deal! I think there was, to a certain degree, fighting over those comics. Haha, I can't imagine the kind of fighting there may have been over Book VII of The Republic, or yeah, the Book of Job or something!
The difference is that comics you can generally identify pretty quickly. An ancient text without the title, perhaps without even punctuation, that's a bit tougher to figure out - what you've even got your hands on
@GregoryBSadler Dang, yeah, I appreciate the context! Thanks!
One question, what translation of the Republic are you using?, I am using Jowett translation and is a little bit different, regards
I read the text in a variety of English translations and supply my own sometimes from the Greek. The particular one in the anthology is by Shorey
@@GregoryBSadler thank you!
Knowing that Cicero couldnt be in public life with the new govt he went on a very noble mission spreading Philosophy and awesome ideas for the common people. There is a higher purpose in sharing knowledge. This was very magnanimous of him.

I know it's about not getting attached (too much) and being prepared for death... not only for oneself but also for others. But... If the Captain of the boat is death and life is going ashore to get onions until the captain calls...i wonder...where the boat is going next? Are there possibly other islands? Can I go ashore again? Or is this irrelevant for this metaphor because it ended when the captain called? For me in this context I always think reincarnation. 🤔
Yes, all of that is irrelevant
